Survival Food

When you find yourself in a survival situation, food can sometimes mean the difference between life and death. Stashing enough food to at least get you and your family through the first few days of an emergency situation is very important. Next to water, food is the most important item in a survival kit. It can give you the energy you need to do whatever is necessary for survival.

So exactly how much food should you pack into your bug out bag or survival kit? Well, that all depends on whether or not you’re planning to be on the move. If you anticipate a lot of hiking, your calorie intake will be substantially higher. And if you’re not alone, will each person in your party be capable of carrying at least a three day food supply in their own bug out bag? If you’ve got small children, you may find yourself carrying more than your share. On the other hand, if you’re planning on staying in one place, it’ll be easy to stash a three day supply of food or even more.

For those on the move, freeze-dried emergency rations is the best way to go. It weighs less and has a longer shelf life than other foods. However, it can be more expensive. But with the right equipment it’s possible to produce your own freeze-dried meal packets to save money. If you’re not limited on your budget, and plan on buying prepackaged, dehydrated meals, read on for some of my favorite brands. It should also be noted that these survival food brands are not listed in any particular order. Your individual situation will be different than someone else’s, and therefore what’s best for you may not be best for another.

Many Great Survival Food Options

You’ll find many great options for freeze-dried and dehydrated meals out there. Just make sure you calculate how many calories your family or party will need per day. Once that’s established, it’s an easy job to multiply that amount by how many days, weeks, or months you want your survival food supply to last.
